How Our Online Stereo Test Works
Our stereo test uses the Web Audio API to generate and route audio tones to specific channels. The tool creates an AudioContext, generates sine wave tones with an OscillatorNode, and routes them to the left, right, or both channels using a ChannelMergerNode.
Channel Routing with ChannelMergerNode
The ChannelMergerNode is the key to our stereo test. It has two inputs (0 and 1), corresponding to the left and right output channels. When you click "Left Channel", the oscillator tone is connected to input 0 (left) only. When you click "Right Channel", it is connected to input 1 (right) only. When you click "Both Channels", the tone is connected to both inputs simultaneously. This provides perfect channel separation — the tone goes exactly where we tell it to, with no bleeding between channels.
Stereo Panning with StereoPannerNode
For the pan sweep test, we use a StereoPannerNode with a pan value that smoothly ramps from -1 (full left) to +1 (full right) over 4 seconds using linearRampToValueAtTime. This creates a smooth, continuous movement of the sound from left to right, testing your stereo imaging. If the sound jumps or sounds uneven, it may indicate a mono audio device or audio processing interference.
Balance Test with Channel Alternation
The balance test rapidly alternates the tone between the left and right channels every 800ms, allowing you to directly compare the perceived loudness of each channel. If one side sounds louder or quieter, your audio balance is off. This is a simpler but more direct test than the pan sweep for detecting loudness imbalances.
Limitations
While our stereo test is highly effective, there are some limitations: (1) Browser audio processing may affect the results — some browsers apply audio normalization or spatial effects. (2) Bluetooth audio devices may introduce latency or compress the audio. (3) The tool cannot test more than two channels — for 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound, use your OS or receiver's built-in speaker test. Common Stereo Audio Problems You Can Detect
🔇 Dead Channel
No sound from one channel during the individual left or right test. Caused by a disconnected speaker, damaged cable, faulty audio jack, or audio balance shifted fully to one side. Check connections, try a different cable, and verify OS audio balance settings.
⚖️ Audio Imbalance
One channel is noticeably louder or quieter than the other. Often caused by OS audio balance being shifted, a partially damaged speaker, or uneven earpad wear on headphones. Center the balance in your OS settings and clean or replace earpads if needed.
🔄 Mono Output

📉 Poor Stereo Imaging
The pan sweep sounds choppy, jumps between channels, or does not create a smooth left-to-right movement. May indicate a phase issue, audio enhancement software interference, or a low-quality audio adapter. Disable audio enhancements and test with wired headphones.
🔊 Channel Bleeding
Sound from the left test is faintly audible in the right speaker (or vice versa). With speakers, some crosstalk is normal due to acoustic physics. With headphones, channel bleeding indicates a wiring issue or a faulty audio adapter. Test with different headphones to isolate the problem.
