How Our Online Keyboard Tester Works
Our keyboard tester runs entirely in your web browser using the KeyboardEvent Web API. When you press a key, the browser fires two key events that our keyboard tester listens to:
Keyboard Events: keydown and keyup
When a key is pressed, the browser fires a keydown event. When the key is released, it fires a keyup event. Our tester highlights the key green on keydown and returns it to idle on keyup. If a key stays green after you release it, the keyup event may not have fired — indicating a stuck key.
event.code vs event.key
The event.code property represents the physical key on the keyboard (e.g., KeyA, Digit1, Space), while event.key represents the character produced (e.g., a, 1, ). Our keyboard tester uses event.code for highlighting keys on the visual layout, which is why it works correctly regardless of your keyboard layout (QWERTY, AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak).
Keyboard Tester Browser Compatibility
The KeyboardEvent API is supported by all modern browsers — Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari, and Opera.
